Everest Singalila Trek

This trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in the West Sikkim, which is famous for its rhododendrons, and spectacular views of the Khangchendzonga and Everest ranges. The trial passes through dense coniferous forests which are home to a wide diversity of birds. The trek is a delight for birdwatchers with an opportunity to see many rare birds like Black-breasted Parrotbill,  Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal and Rusty-bellied Shortwing, besides many varieties of Flycatchers, Laughingthrushes , Tits and Babblers.

In Barsey one passes through dense thickets of rhododendrons below the Tal mountain ridge laden with conifer forest of silver fir and hemlock. The trek winds its way through the source of two rivers, which originate from moist grassy meadows. After Thulo Dhaap the trail climbs up to the Shingalila Ridge opening up grand vistas of the snow capped mountain ranges. The highlight of the trek is the sunrise view of Khangchendzonga and Everest from  Phoketydara view point.

Itinerary 
 
Day 1 - Bagdogra to Martam
 
Pickup from Bagdogra/NJP and drive to Martam 5940 ft, our base village for the trek.
 
Day 2 - Trek: Hee Bermiok to Samathar
 
The trek commences with a steep climb through mixed rhododendron and bamboo forests upto 8890 ft.
 
Day 3 - Trek: Samathar to Barsey
 
Our ascent continues to 9900 ft through the thick forest amongst the chirping of the birds. Rhododendrons completely surround us once we reach the ridge. In the afternoon we explore some trails around Barsey
 
Day 4 - Trek: Barsey to Joreybotey
 
Today’s walk is an easy one mainly through rhododendron and mixed temperate forests at 9996 ft. Towards the end we get our first views of the imposing Mt. Khangchendzonga
 
Day 5 - Trek: Joreybotey to Khalijhar
 
A steep descent to 10910 ft gets us to a stream from where we start climbing through mixed temperate forests.  
 
Day 6 - Trek: Khalijhar to Chittery
 
Early morning trek to Phoktay Dara, a viewpoint with spectacular views of Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest. Today’ path mainly runs besides the Nepal border providing good views of the Nepalese villages on the other side.
 
Day 7 - Trek: Chewabhanjyang to Uttarey
 
Our final descend through the dense forests gets us to the blissfully tranquil Uttarey village. Night halt at homestay in Uttarey
 
Day 8 - Uttarey to Pelling – Sightseeing                   B, D
 
After breakfast we move on for our day of sight seeing. Visit the Rabdentse ruins and Pemagyatse monastery at Pelling. Move on to Khecheopalri lake and if time permits to Yuksom. Night halt at a homestay in Darap
 
Day 9 - Pelling to Bagdogra/NJP

Accommodation in homestay in Martam, Uttarey and Darap on twin sharing basis
Guide, cook, porters, rations & permit charges for the trek
All meals during the course of the trek. Vegetarian meals will be served
All surface travel in Sumo/Max or similar vehicle
 
Excludes
 
Travel from city of origin to Silliguri/Bagdogra and back.
Hiring of extra porters/mules for hauling excess personal luggage.
Excess stay & meals due to bad weather conditions or strikes, resulting in delay of flights or any other form of transport.
Rescue / medical charges in case needed due to high altitude sickness, any ailment and/or accidents
Soft drink charges, table drinks, laundry, cigarettes, telephone expenses, beer and liquor charges
Meals during journeys, which is lunch on Day 1 and Day 8
