Fly merely one hour from Mumbai (Bombay) and you find a unique home-stay experience in the heart of a bustling city. Arts Reverie is in the heart of a traditional pol or enclosed neighborhood, part of a warren of winding streets filled with houses, temples, and extravagant bird-feeders at its tiny crossroads. Virtually a mirage within streets filled with cows, dogs, pedestrians and cyclists, this tiny, jewel-like mansion offers privacy and space for reflection.
The two-floor 1920s house originally belonged to a Jain jeweller and was restored by the Ahmedabad Heritage Centre as part of the Indo-French Cooperation Project for revitalization of Ahmedabad. It is a typical traditional haveli. Original picturesque plaster adornments have been maintained, interiors are charming and contemporary and traditional elements co-exist with such modern conveniences as wireless throughout.
Arts Reverie is the idea of three experienced arts managers, one Indian and two from the UK. Anupa Mehta is part of Art Works, and Barney Hare Duke and his colleague Jeremy Theophilus are from the English A Fine Line: Cultural Practice. They have created a nurturing and stimulating art environment that beautifully responds to the growing need for international artists to engage with each other and their cultures. They brought in Arvind Lodaya for identity design, and Anand patel for spatial planning, and Mehtra and Harita Kapur supplied interior accessories.
The result is a six-person lodging (two single rooms and two double rooms, all air-conditioned) as well as common work areas and an intimate performance/gallery space. Open courtyards and side terraces offer inviting niches for contemplation. An artists' abode, the Arts Reverie provides the all year round accommodation, both for short and long-term stay. Arts Reverie arranges for many cultural events, as well as gets the artists in touch with the who's who of the cultural world. It is devoted to making the place an ideal haven for the writers, visual artists, poets, dancers, visiting curators, musician, academics, journalists, photographers, cultural study experts, playwrights, architects, and the whole gamut of creativity.
